SECOND POINT.

Never has human reason shown itself so prideful, and put on display so much powerlessness, as in the Sect of the Stoics. These Philosophers undertook to convince Mankind that their own body was something foreign to them, the interests of which should be indifferent to them, and that the pains which afflicted this body were ignored by the Sage, which were completely distinct from the spiritual part of himself. Thus, the Stoic regarded evils with contempt, as enemies incapable of doing him harm; and he assumed a pompous patience, based on the impassiveness on which his Sect flattered itself. To suffer with constancy would have been too human, he didn’t suffer at all, like Jupiter himself, in whose perfections and happiness he took no interest.
